20-11-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has completed an extensive three-day operational training exercise in Sabah waters, deploying nine vessels in a demonstration of maritime capability and readiness.
The strategic exercise, which commenced on November 14, saw the participation of eight surface vessels and one submarine, including the formidable KD Kelantan and KD Kedah, alongside the submarine KD Tun Razak. The fleet traversed the South China Sea to conduct operations near the Gugusan Semarang Peninjau offshore station.
Vice Admiral Datuk Muhammad Ruzelme Ahmad Fahimy, Eastern Fleet Commander, who launched the exercise at Sepanggar naval base, emphasised its significance: “These manoeuvres are crucial in preparing our fleet to counter various maritime sovereignty threats and serve as preparation for next February’s Kerismas exercise, our largest annual naval deployment”.
The comprehensive training programme, part of the broader Ostex East 2/2024 annual exercise running from November 11-18, encompassed a wide range of naval operations. Activities included tactical manoeuvres, naval gunfire support, and advanced anti-submarine warfare exercises.
Personnel underwent intensive training in boarding procedures, maritime knowledge enhancement, and helicopter landing operations. The exercise was bolstered by Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) assets, strengthening joint operational capabilities.
“This integrated approach with the RMAF demonstrates our commitment to maintaining comprehensive maritime security”, a senior naval officer explained. The exercise included dedicated port phase activities, featuring operational discussions and specialised exchanges between naval and air force personnel.
