6-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Four masked assailants ambushed a gold trader’s vehicle, making off with bags filled with gold jewelry worth a staggering RM1.4 million in less than 20 seconds.
The incident occurred in Kuala Kangsar this morning at approximately 10 a.m. Two gold traders had parked their silver Honda sedan near a gold shop on a street adjacent to the riverbank. As they prepared to promote their gold jewelry, two vehicles swiftly approached, sandwiching their car. The leading vehicle was a Toyota Hilux, while the Mazda was positioned behind it. Four masked assailants quickly emerged from the vehicles, brandishing machetes, and smashed the driver’s side window of the gold traders’ vehicle. The perpetrators subdued the traders, then proceeded to slash the car’s front tire with their weapons.
With the doors and trunk of the vehicle forcibly opened, the assailants swiftly grabbed multiple bags containing gold jewelry before making their escape. The entire ordeal unfolded within a mere 20 seconds, leaving the traders stunned and their vehicle damaged.
Witnesses revealed that moments before the heist, the two Chinese male gold traders, in their early twenties, had just disembarked from their vehicle. The sudden arrival of the two vehicles caught them off guard. The incident occurred merely a few steps away from the gold shop they intended to visit, with a distance of only five parking spaces.
Although employees inside the gold shop did not witness the actual incident, they speculated that the assailants had been tailing the victims for some time, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Fearful for their safety, the shop employees remained inside, cautiously observing the situation until the robbers fled the scene.
The security footage of the heist captured three distinct sounds, believed to be the shattering of the car window and the slashing of the tire. Following the incident, the forensics team from Kuala Kangsar Police Headquarters arrived at the scene to collect evidence. The damaged vehicle was subsequently towed to the police station to aid in the investigation.
Kuala Kangsar District Police Chief ACP Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob issued a statement, revealing that the robbers, armed with machetes and hammers, had successfully looted the gold traders, seizing approximately RM1.4 million worth of gold jewelry. Authorities have invoked Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code, pertaining to gang robbery and armed robbery respectively, and are conducting a thorough investigation. If convicted, the perpetrators could face a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Eyewitnesses described the robbery as a harrowing experience, emphasizing that the entire incident unfolded right before their eyes. The audacity and precision of the robbers left them shocked and concerned for their safety.
