4-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A river surge in Malaysia swept away ten members of a single family while swimming at the Jeram Mawar waterfall located deep in a forest in the district of Chukai in the eastern state of Terengganu. Seven bodies were found nearly 25km from where they were swimming, according to a senior police official on Tuesday.
The tragedy happened last Friday and the victims were aged between four and 40 years old. Nine of the victims were related and the other was a fiancé. Local police chief Hanyan Ramlan told AFP that the sudden surge in water caught them by surprise, and the water level rose up to three meters.
“We have intensified the search for the remaining three victims. There are 210 officers from the various agencies assisted by tracker dogs covering 32km,” Hanyan said.
The search parties include officers from the Royal Malaysian Police, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, among others. The search for the three remaining victims will continue until they are found.
