28-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A ride-hailing driver narrowly escaped a potential robbery when a teenage passenger attempted to stab him with a knife-like weapon from the back seat. Fortunately, the weapon was thwarted by the driver’s seatbelt, preventing the assailant from succeeding in the attack.
According to a circulating surveillance video on social media, the alarming incident occurred around 6:21 pm on November 27, reportedly in the Sungai Buloh area of Kedah.
The video depicts the Chinese driver navigating through a residential area with the teenage passenger seemingly giving arbitrary directions from left to right, agitating the driver. The driver expressed frustration, accusing the passenger of not knowing where he lived and admonishing him, stating he was not the passenger’s father. Subsequently, as the driver reached for cash from his front pocket, the teenager suddenly brandished a “knife” from behind, aiming for the driver’s chest and attempting to snatch the money. Fortunately, the weapon got lodged in the seatbelt, and the teenager’s limited force from the back seat prevented substantial harm to the driver.
Immediately after the attack, the driver seized the assailant’s left hand, biting it vigorously during the struggle. The assailant eventually fled the vehicle, unable to carry out the intended robbery.
The video has incited anger among netizens, with some condemning the audacity of the seemingly young teenager who, despite his appearance, engaged in such aggressive behavior. Many labelled the act as tantamount to attempted murder and expressed relief that the driver emerged unscathed.
Online comments also speculated that the weapon used by the teenager appeared to be a toy knife, suggesting that the driver may not have sustained injuries, despite the dramatic nature of the incident.
Some netizens highlighted the importance of in-car surveillance systems, acknowledging that the complete recording of the incident serves as crucial evidence to prevent the distortion of the sequence of events by potential suspects.
