4-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Renowned Malaysian celebrity chef Redzuawan Ismail, popularly known as Chef Wan, has announced that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the immune system. The 65-year-old chef revealed his diagnosis in an Instagram post on Thursday.
Chef Wan had gone for a check-up after discovering swollen lymph nodes and was subsequently diagnosed with lymphoma. In his post, he mentioned that his doctors had run his biopsy twice to confirm the diagnosis, and he is scheduled for a positron emission tomography (PET) scan to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of his body.
Despite the grim news, Chef Wan remains positive and joked about wearing fabulous wigs after chemotherapy. He also stated that he accepts the challenge with an open heart and great courage, adding that he needs to be strong and get well to look after his loved ones.
Chef Wan became a household name in the 1990s with his witty and humorous cooking shows. He even made guest appearances in local variety shows in Singapore and opened two restaurants, Chef Wan’s Kitchen and 1 Market, both of which have since ceased operations.
The online community has since flooded his post with well-wishes, with some sharing their personal experiences in overcoming cancer. One fan wrote, “Yes, that’s the spirit. You will be fine, God willing. I was also diagnosed with cancer last year. Completed chemotherapy and radiotherapy early this year. Stay positive. It helps a lot. May Allah ease everything for you and your family. You got this.”
Chef Wan’s mother died earlier this year after battling multiple ailments, including cancer, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. He ended his post by saying that he and his loved ones will go through this together to inspire and help others in the future.
Chef Wan’s positive attitude and courage in the face of his diagnosis are an inspiration to his fans and the wider community.
