2-3-2024 (PHNOM PENH) Cambodia’s iconic Angkor Archaeological Park has witnessed a remarkable surge in foreign visitors, with 235,850 tourists exploring its ancient wonders during the first two months of 2024. This marks an impressive 50% increase from the same period last year when 156,951 visitors were recorded, according to a news release from the state-owned Angkor Enterprise, disclosed on Saturday.
The revenue generated from ticket sales for the January-February period soared to US$11.2 million, reflecting a substantial 52% rise from the US$7.38 million reported in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Nestled in the northwest Siem Reap province, the expansive 401-square-km Angkor Archaeological Park is home to 91 ancient temples constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries. Recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on its World Heritage List in 1992, the park stands as Cambodia’s most sought-after tourist destination.
The surge in tourist numbers is attributed to the ongoing Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year, launched in January 2024. Officials anticipate that this exchange initiative will be a significant draw for Chinese tourists, particularly to the Angkor park.
Cambodian Tourism Minister Sok Soken expressed confidence, stating, “I’m strongly confident that the 2024 Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year will become a new driving force to attract more Chinese tourists and investors to Cambodia.” He made these remarks during the launch event at the Terrace of the Elephants within the Angkor park.
Top Sopheak, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, emphasized the potential role of the Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. Operational since November, this airport is expected to enhance international travel to the Angkor park.
“This international airport is playing a crucial role in helping boost the country’s tourism, economy, trade, investment,” noted Sopheak. With its 3,600-meter-long runway and 4E-level international status, the airport stands as Cambodia’s largest, serving as the primary gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park.
