2-11-2024 (SYDNEY) Cassius, the record-holding saltwater crocodile that captured global attention for its extraordinary size, has died at Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat in Queensland, Australia. The massive reptile, measuring 5.48 metres in length and weighing approximately one tonne, was believed to be more than 110 years old.
The sanctuary, located on Green Island near Cairns, announced on 2 November that the legendary crocodile had been experiencing deteriorating health since mid-October. “His advanced age exceeded typical life expectancy for wild crocodiles,” the facility stated in their public announcement.
The magnificent creature had called the sanctuary home since 1987, following its relocation from the Northern Territory, a region renowned for its crocodile-centred tourism industry. Cassius claimed the Guinness World Records title as the largest crocodile in captivity following the death of Lolong, a 6.17-metre Philippine crocodile, in 2013.
Throughout his residency at Marineland Melanesia, Cassius became an iconic figure in Australian wildlife conservation, drawing visitors from across the globe eager to witness the remarkable specimen.
