5-4-2024 (MANILA) Chief of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Ruel Rivera, revealed on Thursday that approximately 600 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) across various jails in Metro Manila are suffering from skin conditions like scabies and boils, exacerbated by the sweltering heat.
The alarming health issue within the congested jail facilities demands immediate attention, emphasized Rivera.
Scabies, a contagious skin condition, spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual, while boils or carbuncles can be contracted from those with either the infection or a staph infection.
In response to the crisis, the BJMP has collaborated with the Department of Health and augmented their medical staff to address the growing health concerns among PDLs. Rivera noted the deployment of jail nurses round the clock to cater to the needs of the detainees.
Aside from skin ailments, some PDLs are also grappling with sore eyes due to the oppressive heat, as reported by Rivera.
To alleviate the discomfort caused by the scorching weather, authorities are implementing measures such as providing additional electric fans and installing air shafts inside the jails. Rivera urged BJMP regional directors to ensure that PDLs have access to regular baths to combat the relentless heatwave.
Efforts to decongest jail facilities nationwide are underway, added the official, underscoring the ongoing commitment to improve the living conditions of detainees, especially during the dry season.
