2-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) A batch of honey dates from EGO is being recalled in Singapore after testing revealed high levels of sulphur dioxide, an allergen that was not declared on the packaging. The affected products have a best-before date of November 18, 2024, and originated from China, according to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), which made the announcement on Friday.
The SFA detected sulphur dioxide levels that exceeded the maximum limit specified in the Singapore Food Regulations. Consequently, the agency has instructed importer Kee Wee Hup Kee Food Manufacture to initiate a recall of the affected products. The recall is currently underway.
Excessive amounts of sulphite can trigger allergic reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to the substance. Symptoms may include hives, itching, diarrhea, stomachache, and vomiting.
Sulphite is commonly used as a food additive and is typically tested for as sulphur dioxide. In light of the recall, the SFA has advised consumers who have purchased the affected honey dates not to consume them. Additionally, those who experience any discomfort after consumption are encouraged to seek medical attention.
Singapore’s food regulations require that food products containing ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity must declare them on the packaging labels in order to protect public health. The SFA emphasized that all ingredients in pre-packaged food should be clearly specified on the product label, listed in descending order of their proportions by weight.
This is not the first time the importer Kee Wee Hup Kee Food Manufacture has been instructed to recall a product. Earlier in January, the company was directed to recall strawberry-flavored Swiss rolls from EGO as a precautionary measure due to high levels of sorbic acid. The SFA clarified at the time that sorbic acid, a permitted food additive used for preservation, was unlikely to have any adverse health effects.
Consumers who have purchased the affected EGO honey dates are advised to comply with the recall and refrain from consuming the product. The SFA continues to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure food safety and public well-being.
