19-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) The tranquil waters of Bukit Timah Canal in Singapore took on an unexpected hue on January 17, leaving onlookers perplexed. The unusual sight, captured in a TikTok video by user @vinnography, showcased the canal’s water appearing in a vibrant blue shade, a stark contrast to its usual light brown color. The video quickly gained traction on social media, sparking curiosity and speculation among netizens.
Singapore’s National Water Agency, PUB, confirmed that they were aware of the phenomenon and promptly launched an investigation into the matter. The PUB assured the public that no abnormalities were detected in the water quality downstream of the canal or at Marina Reservoir, the water body to which the canal leads.
The TikTok video, filmed near Newton Life Church and Chui Huay Lim Club, showcased the brilliant blue water from various angles, including viewpoints outside the church and temple. It even captured glimpses of swimming pools within a nearby private housing estate, further accentuating the stark contrast between the canal’s water and the typical color of swimming pools.
However, the peculiar blue hue was short-lived. By the following day, January 18, the water had returned to its normal shade, as confirmed by an update provided by @vinnography. It seemed as though the incident had passed without a trace.

PUB officials promptly responded to the reports, dispatching officers to the scene for immediate investigations. Despite thorough inspections, no traces of unusual discharge were found at the location or further upstream. The water quality downstream of the canal and Marina Reservoir remained unaffected, providing reassurance that the incident had not caused any environmental harm.
While the cause of the sudden blue water remains unknown, PUB continues to investigate the incident. They have also reached out to developers and contractors in the vicinity to remind them of the legal implications and seriousness of discharging substances into public drains.
