17-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian automotive manufacturer Proton has made a significant stride into the electric vehicle market with the unveiling of its inaugural domestically produced electric SUV, the e.MAS 7, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s automotive industry.
The landmark launch, which took place at the Kuala Lumpur International Trade and Exhibition Centre, positions the e.MAS 7 as one of the most competitively priced electric vehicles in the Malaysian market. The entry-level variant carries a price tag of RM105,800, whilst the premium model is available at RM123,800.
In a market currently dominated by international giants Tesla and BYD, Proton’s entry aligns with Malaysia’s ambitious environmental targets, which include achieving a 20 percent share of electric vehicles in new car sales by the end of this decade.
The launch comes on the heels of Chinese automotive giant Geely’s substantial commitment to the Malaysian automotive sector. Geely, which holds a 49.9 percent stake in Proton, pledged a £10 billion investment last year to expand operations at the Tanjong Malim manufacturing facility, situated approximately 50 kilometres north of the capital.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Malaysian Premier Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism about the nation’s automotive capabilities. “The e.MAS 7 represents a testament to our manufacturing prowess in the electric vehicle sector,” the Prime Minister remarked.
Industry experts have responded positively to the launch. Automotive analyst Nicholas King suggests the competitive pricing strategy could catalyse significant changes in Malaysia’s electric vehicle landscape. “The attractive price point of the e.MAS 7 is poised to disrupt the local electric vehicle market dynamics, potentially accelerating the nation’s transition towards sustainable mobility,” King observed.
