12-6-2024 (BANGKOK) An investigation by Thailand’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) has concluded that the unfortunate death of a police officer during an elite training exercise was not due to physical abuse, but rather pre-existing health complications.
The probe was initiated in response to allegations circulated on social media, which claimed that Police Corporal Rattapong succumbed to kidney failure and heat stroke during a gruelling drill conducted by the Special Service Division (SSD). The online post further alleged that the officer’s remains were returned to his family in Lamphun without an autopsy, acting on orders from his commanding officer. It also suggested that the SSD commander failed to initiate a fact-finding inquiry and allowed the training to proceed uninterrupted, while keeping Corporal Rattapong’s death under wraps. The post went on to claim that officers considering withdrawal from the training faced physical assault, beatings, kicks, and severe stomping.
However, CIB Deputy Chief, Police Major General Phumin Phumphanmuang, stated that an investigation ordered by CIB Commander Police Lieutenant General Jirabhop Bhuridej revealed a different narrative. According to Pol Maj Gen Phumin, the deceased officer had previously enrolled in an anti-terrorism training program at the Naresuan Camp but was unable to complete it due to kidney-related health issues. Undeterred by this setback, Corporal Rattapong later applied for a specialized operation course under the police commando unit.
Pol Maj Gen Phumin categorically denied allegations of physical abuse or beatings by the drill instructors during Corporal Rattapong’s training. He clarified that the officer was rushed to Pak Kret Hospital for medical treatment related to his pre-existing health condition and was subsequently transferred to the Police General Hospital, where he remained for approximately a week before tragically passing away.
This comprehensive investigation by the CIB aimed to address the concerning claims raised on social media and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Corporal Rattapong’s untimely demise during the elite training program.
