27-9-2023 (BANGKOK) Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is set to embark on an official visit to Cambodia on Thursday, aiming to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Panpree Bahiddha-Nukara made the announcement, highlighting that this visit would mark Prime Minister Thavisin’s first official trip to an ASEAN country since assuming office. The proximity of Cambodia to Thailand makes it an important neighbor, further emphasizing the significance of this visit.
Following his visit to Cambodia, Prime Minister Thavisin plans to extend his diplomatic engagements to other member countries of the regional bloc. The objective is to introduce himself and foster stronger ties with neighboring nations. The Foreign Affairs Ministry reported that bilateral trade between Thailand and Cambodia exceeded 300 billion baht last year, underscoring the economic value of this relationship.
Regarding the potential visit to Saudi Arabia, Minister Panpree stated that Thailand has successfully normalized relations with the Kingdom after more than three decades of strained ties. During the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Thavisin held constructive bilateral discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, receiving a positive response. However, a specific date for the visit to Saudi Arabia has yet to be determined. Minister Panpree also highlighted that Saudi investors have expressed keen interest in investing in Thailand. Consequently, the Thai government must adequately prepare to attract investments from this Middle Eastern nation.
In addition to strengthening bilateral ties and economic engagements, Thailand is actively pursuing a position on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2025-2027 term. Minister Panpree emphasized the Thai government’s commitment to human rights issues, asserting that they attach great importance to promoting and protecting human rights. He stated that the United Nations’ four pillars, which encompass peace and security, rule of law, development, and human rights, guide their approach. Minister Panpree also reminded that Thailand previously served on the UNHRC in 2012. Expressing Thailand’s aspirations, he reaffirmed their desire to secure a seat on the council for the 2025-2027 term.
