15-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that while Malaysia is not leaning towards China, its geographical proximity and a long-standing friendship position China as a reliable ally. During a question and answer session at the University of California, Berkeley, Anwar highlighted the significance of both China and the United States in Malaysia’s diplomatic and economic landscape.
Acknowledging the United States as a traditional ally and a crucial investor contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth, Anwar noted, “Cumulatively, the United States stands as number one in terms of our total investments, but increasingly, China has become one of the major investors, and they may invest in Malaysia.”
The prime minister emphasized the importance of engaging with both major powers, considering Malaysia’s status as a developing and emerging economy. Anwar stated, “While we have to listen to big powers, they also have to engage and listen to the views and expression of our country. We, as a developing and emerging economy, need to engage and decide what is best for our country.”
Anwar underscored the geographical significance of China as a neighbour and an important economic partner. He expressed optimism about the benefits of continued engagement with China, stating, “China is our neighbour, an important country and has matured in terms of its economic vibrancy, and we would benefit immensely as we continue to engage with it.”
Addressing Malaysia and ASEAN’s stance on the South China Sea, Anwar highlighted the need for a multilateral regional position in engaging with China. He acknowledged recent developments announced by China that may infringe upon Malaysia’s territory or claim in the South China Sea but expressed confidence in successful negotiations with China.
While acknowledging the challenges with the Philippines and Vietnam, Anwar emphasized the importance of maintaining the South China Sea issue as a regional concern. He advocated for aggressive diplomatic engagement within ASEAN and with China to prevent exacerbation of the crisis.
Responding to questions about the potential outcomes of bilateral meetings between President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, Anwar highlighted the global significance of these discussions. He anticipated that the engagement could lead to resolutions, particularly in trade and investment matters, which would instill confidence in the global economy.
Anwar concluded by expressing that improved ties between China and the United States would bring immense benefits to ASEAN countries, including Malaysia.
