24-6-2023 (MANILA) President Marcos emphasized the importance of completing critical infrastructure projects on schedule and within budget during his address to officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on the occasion of the department’s 125th anniversary in Manila. He also highlighted the need for inclusive and accessible designs in public structures.
In his speech, President Marcos urged DPWH officials to embrace new technologies and techniques that can benefit the Filipino people. He called on them to remain committed to the administration’s eight-point socioeconomic agenda by ensuring the timely construction and completion of critical infrastructure projects.
“To fulfill this administration’s agenda, I urge you to construct and finish critical infrastructure projects on time, adhering to schedules and allocated budgets,” Marcos stated. “In line with this, I encourage you to streamline procedures, prevent delays and cost overruns, and promote transparency in all government projects and transactions.”
The President stressed the significance of leveraging technological advancements and innovations in the development of infrastructure systems. He also reminded the DPWH to prioritize the integrity and accessibility of government-funded infrastructure. Marcos emphasized the importance of considering the needs of all individuals, including people with disabilities, pregnant women, the elderly, and children. He further emphasized the incorporation of cultural and historical elements into infrastructure designs to foster a sense of pride and belonging among Filipinos.
“We must ensure that our infrastructure not only survives physically but also serves its purpose for the next 80 to 100 years. This has always been a part of our planning,” the Chief Executive remarked. He also highlighted the necessity of ensuring the resilience, dependability, adaptability, and sustainability of structures to benefit future generations.
In March, the National Economic and Development Authority board, chaired by President Marcos, approved 194 infrastructure projects with a total value of around P9 trillion. These projects mainly focused on irrigation, water supply, and flood management.
Additionally, the President has given his approval to the proposed 2024 national budget, amounting to P5.768 trillion, as announced by the Department of Budget and Management. This budget reflects a 9.5 percent increase compared to the current year’s budget of P5.268 trillion.
