8-11-2024 (MANILA) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced ambitious plans to modernise the Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) during the force’s 74th anniversary celebrations.
Speaking at a commemorative event held at the Philippine International Convention Center on Thursday, Marcos outlined his administration’s commitment to enhancing the Corps’ operational readiness through substantial infrastructure investments and facility upgrades.
The President, who himself underwent Marine training in his younger years, emphasised the transformative impact of the organisation on his personal development. “The Marine Corps shaped me in ways that no other institution could have,” Marcos reflected, drawing from his firsthand experience with the elite force.
The modernisation initiative comes amid growing regional maritime challenges, with the President acknowledging the increasing complexity of protecting the archipelagic nation’s vast shoreline and territorial waters. “Our commitment to building a robust defence posture is unwavering,” Marcos declared, adding that the planned upgrades would align with the country’s broader strategic objectives.
Major General Arturo Rojas, the PMC Commandant, reinforced the Corps’ dedication to public service, particularly highlighting their crucial role in disaster response. “Our Marines will remain at the forefront of humanitarian relief operations, ready to serve the Filipino people in times of crisis,” Rojas assured.
The Philippine Marine Corps, established in 1950 as the naval infantry arm of the Philippine Navy, has been instrumental in maintaining national security and sovereignty throughout its seven-decade history. During the ceremony, which included a traditional cake-cutting ritual, President Marcos also presented commendations to distinguished Marine personnel for their exemplary service.
