8-8-2023 (JAKARTA) President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted the fundamental objectives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the organization marked its 56th anniversary. The ASEAN, established over half a century ago, was envisioned to cultivate a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the commemoration event held at the ASEAN Secretariat Building, President Jokowi underscored the enduring significance of these goals. He acknowledged the complex global landscape, marked by formidable challenges, including post-pandemic economic recovery and intensified international rivalries.
In the face of these challenges, President Jokowi expressed his confidence in the collective strength of ASEAN member states. Emphasizing unity as a pivotal factor, he outlined how the diverse characteristics of member countries mutually enrich and bolster the region’s resilience.
Diversity, Jokowi stressed, does not impede the shared resolve and aspirations of ASEAN. This unity, he asserted, forms a firm foundation upon which the organization can address global dynamics and contribute to the well-being of both the region and the wider world.
President Jokowi envisioned a prosperous future for ASEAN, positioning the organization as a hub of growth that yields substantial benefits for its people and beyond. He urged ASEAN to harness its economic potential, demographic dividend, and promising opportunities to solidify its status as a beacon of global stability and prosperity.
“We must seize this moment to shape ASEAN into a global frontrunner, a bastion of peace, stability, and worldwide prosperity,” President Jokowi affirmed.
In his capacity as the current Chair of ASEAN, Indonesia assumes a pivotal role in guiding the organization towards these objectives. President Jokowi expressed Indonesia’s commitment to laying a robust groundwork for the region, fostering the resilience needed to navigate challenges and respond to shifting international dynamics.
Concluding his address, President Jokowi participated in a symbolic tradition. He cut a ceremonial dish known as nasi tumpeng, a representation of celebratory occasions, and presented the first piece to ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn. The second piece was offered to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, marking a symbolic gesture of unity and shared purpose within the ASEAN community.
