9-5-2024 (WASHINGTON) President Joe Biden publicly cautioned Israel on Wednesday (May 8), stating that the United States would halt weapon supplies if Israeli forces mount a major invasion of Rafah, a densely populated city in southern Gaza.
Biden’s remarks, made in an interview with CNN, mark the first time a US president has issued such a direct warning to Israel. They underscore a deepening divide between the US and its key Middle Eastern ally.
Acknowledging the use of US weapons by Israel in Gaza, where its military campaign against Hamas has resulted in significant civilian casualties, Biden expressed concern over the impact of these arms. He specifically mentioned the delivery of large bombs, noting their role in civilian deaths.
In response to potential Israeli action in Rafah, a senior US official, speaking anonymously, revealed that a shipment of heavy bombs, including 1,800 2,000-pound and 1,700 500-pound bombs, had been paused after careful review.
The release of Biden’s interview came shortly after US Defence Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III publicly confirmed the president’s decision to delay the delivery of heavy bombs, citing concerns for Rafah and the need to protect civilians.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza was triggered by an attack by Hamas on October 7, resulting in numerous casualties and abductions. The United States, as Israel’s primary arms supplier, has expedited deliveries following the incident.
Under a longstanding agreement, the US provides significant military aid to Israel, including funding for defence systems like the Iron Dome. Biden affirmed continued support for defensive weaponry while signalling a reluctance to supply arms that could exacerbate civilian harm.
