8-7-2023 (MANILA) President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has affirmed the continuation of the modernization efforts of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to address the current challenges faced by the country.
Speaking at Fort Bonifacio, Marcos revealed that the government is nearing the completion of the first phase of the AFP modernization program, which consists of multiple stages.
“There are several phases to it. We are reaching the conclusion of the first phase. We will then proceed to the next phase as per our agreed schedule, especially regarding equipment procurement and, most importantly, training,” he stated during a press briefing on Friday.
Marcos emphasized the importance of keeping the program on track, particularly in terms of acquiring equipment and supplies. He acknowledged that the initial timeline had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have instructed the commanders of the AFP and the service commanders, including the Chief of Staff, to closely monitor the situation because we need to address the present dangers faced by the Philippines,” Marcos explained.
He expressed hope that the program would catch up, allowing the country to return to its intended position within a year or two, considering the setbacks caused by the pandemic.
This is not the first instance where President Marcos has emphasized the significance of modernizing the Philippine military. In 2022, he pledged his support for the AFP modernization program, citing geopolitical tensions, terrorism, and natural disasters as key challenges faced by the nation.
He referred to the AFP modernization program as “crucial” in preparing the military for any eventualities and ensuring their readiness in the face of emerging threats.
