21-8-2023 (MANILA) On Ninoy Aquino Day, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. reiterated his familiar call for unity among Filipinos and encouraged them to “transcend political barriers” in order to advance the nation’s interests.
Ninoy Aquino Day is observed annually to honor the assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose tragic death four decades ago sparked a series of mass protests that eventually brought an end to the dictatorship of Marcos Jr.’s father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
“I stand in solidarity with Filipinos worldwide as we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day. Through his unwavering dedication and fight for causes he believed in, he became a symbol of resilience and determination for countless Filipinos,” expressed Marcos Jr. in a statement released by the Office of the President.
“In our unwavering pursuit of a more united and prosperous Philippines, we must transcend political barriers that hinder our ability to secure comprehensive well-being and progress for our beloved people,” emphasized Marcos Jr. in his statement.
He further urged fellow Filipinos to embrace mental clarity and a shared sense of purpose, enabling them to forge ahead towards a future that aligns with their aspirations and dreams.
Moreover, Marcos Jr. appealed to Filipinos to allow their love for the nation to foster an environment where empathy, compassion, and dialogue prevail.
Aquino, the spouse of former President Corazon Aquino, played a pivotal role in ending the dictatorship of Marcos Sr., whose presidency was brought to a close by the ascension of Corazon Aquino.
Aquino’s untimely demise is widely regarded as the catalyst that, coupled with the growing discontent among the people towards the Marcos administration, led to the historic EDSA revolution three years later.
