9-10-2024 (JAKARTA) President-elect Prabowo Subianto has revealed that his forthcoming cabinet will feature a significant number of ministers from President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) administration. This announcement, made at the BNI Investor Daily Summit, suggests a strategy of continuity and stability as Indonesia prepares for a change in leadership.
Speaking at the Jakarta Convention Center, Prabowo expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from Jokowi and his team during the transition period. “I feel very much aided and supported by Mr Jokowi and his team. Even as I form the cabinet, I see many ministers who will be joining us, many of whom are serving in the current cabinet,” Prabowo stated.
The president-elect’s decision to retain numerous ministers from Jokowi’s administration reflects his high regard for the incumbent government’s talent pool. Prabowo emphasised that his primary focus is on competence and capability, rather than personal background or affiliations. “If an individual is performing well, we will certainly invite them to continue their service,” he affirmed.
Prabowo underscored the importance of selecting the most qualified individuals for his cabinet, regardless of their religious, ethnic, or racial background. “Our sole criterion is their ability to deliver the best for our nation and its people,” he declared, highlighting his commitment to meritocracy in government appointments.
The president-elect’s approach appears to prioritise a smooth transition of power, with Prabowo stating that he feels like “part of Mr Jokowi’s team” during this interim period. This collaborative spirit between the outgoing and incoming administrations is being viewed as a positive sign for Indonesia’s political stability.
Prabowo’s willingness to maintain continuity in key government positions may also serve to reassure investors and international partners about the consistency of Indonesia’s policies and direction. By retaining experienced ministers, the new administration could hit the ground running, potentially avoiding the teething problems often associated with wholesale cabinet changes.
However, some political analysts caution that while continuity can be beneficial, it’s equally important for the new administration to bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to address Indonesia’s ongoing challenges. The balance between continuity and change will be crucial in shaping the effectiveness of Prabowo’s presidency.
