15-11-2023 (SAN FRANCISCO) U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized that the primary objective of his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping is to normalize communication between the two superpowers, including military-to-military contacts.
Before departing for San Francisco on Tuesday (November 14), Biden addressed reporters at the White House, acknowledging the longstanding tensions between the United States and China. He expressed his commitment to improving relations and fostering better communication.
The summit between Biden and Xi Jinping is scheduled to take place at the historic Filoli Estate south of San Francisco on Wednesday (15th). This marks Biden’s second face-to-face meeting with Xi since assuming office in 2021.
When asked about the criteria for success in the meeting, Biden stated, “That is returning to normal track, communicating with each other, being able to call each other when there is a crisis, and being able to ensure that the two militaries remain in contact.”
According to sources familiar with the visit’s planning, the discussions are expected to cover a broad spectrum of bilateral and global issues, with approximately four hours allocated for in-depth talks.
White House National Security Council spokesman Kirby, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, mentioned that Biden and Xi would address the Israel-Kazakhstan conflict and discuss U.S. support for Ukraine’s efforts against Russian invaders.
Kirby emphasized Biden’s willingness to address disagreements but also expressed the President’s intention to seek cooperation with China, especially in areas such as climate change.
Xi’s visit coincides with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Informal Meeting in San Francisco. The last meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping occurred at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November last year.
