15-11-2023 (JAKARTA) Presidential frontrunner Prabowo Subianto expressed a China-friendly stance during a forum this week, emphasizing that Indonesia would maintain a non-aligned foreign policy and avoid aligning with any power blocs if he wins next year’s election.
Speaking on foreign policy at an event organized by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on Monday (November 13), Prabowo praised China’s success in eradicating poverty within a few decades. While Indonesia has traditionally looked to the West for inspiration, Prabowo acknowledged that China’s achievements, particularly in areas like corruption control, education focus, discipline, and national pride, were admirable.
He stated, “I do admire and acknowledge the success of the Chinese leaders in nearly eradicating poverty. The Chinese leaders achieved something very rare in human history. They lifted 700 million people out of poverty in one generation, in 40 years. That is a real achievement.”
Despite expressing openness to working with China, Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia’s foreign policy would remain non-aligned. Dr. Lina Alexandra, an international relations expert from CSIS, noted Prabowo’s keenness to engage more with China and attract Chinese investments.
However, analysts suggest that Prabowo may face limitations in tilting towards Beijing due to Indonesia’s existing strong ties with the United States, especially in defense. The US remains a significant partner for Indonesia, and Prabowo, a former general, is likely to prioritize defense cooperation with the US.
During the forum, Prabowo did not provide concrete plans, and analysts anticipate that he may not significantly alter Indonesia’s foreign policy. While expressing a China-friendly tone, Prabowo is aware of the importance of maintaining ties with the US.
Prabowo’s stance regarding Indonesia’s foreign policy remains somewhat unclear compared to his fellow candidates who recently outlined their positions at CSIS forums. The upcoming election is scheduled for February 14, 2023, with the campaigning set to begin on November 28.
Analysts point out that Prabowo’s foreign policy is likely to evolve as the election season progresses, and his current positioning may be strategic, considering Indonesia’s support for the Palestinian cause and condemnation of Israel’s actions, while the US is a close ally of Israel.
