7-6-2023 (ROME) Pope Francis has been admitted to a hospital in Rome for intestinal surgery, as announced by the Vatican on Wednesday. The 86-year-old pontiff has faced a number of health concerns in recent times.
According to the Vatican’s press service, Francis will undergo a procedure called laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery with prosthesis under general anaesthesia. The surgery aims to address an intestinal blockage and is scheduled for this afternoon. Following the operation, the Pope will remain in the hospital for several days for post-operative care.
This is not the first time Francis has faced health issues. Since assuming the role of head of the Catholic Church in 2013 after Benedict XVI’s resignation, the Pope has experienced various health setbacks. In July 2021, he underwent a significant intestinal surgery that involved the removal of a portion of his bowel. Earlier this year, in March, he was hospitalized for several days due to bronchitis.
The Vatican has not provided further details about the current surgery or the specific reasons behind the intestinal blockage. Updates on the Pope’s condition and recovery are expected to be released in the coming days.
