18-6-2023 (VATICAN CITY) After his recent hospitalization and recovery from surgery, Pope Francis delighted the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square as he resumed his customary Sunday greeting. Expressing his heartfelt thanks for the comfort and prayers he received during his hospital stay, the pontiff conveyed his appreciation to the 15,000 people present, who had eagerly awaited his return.
Although the 86-year-old Pope appeared slightly breathless and hoarse at times, his gestures and improvised moments conveyed his joy in resuming his routine. The public’s applause seemed particularly robust on this occasion, with many showing their enthusiasm through waving flags and sun hats.
However, amidst the joyful atmosphere, Pope Francis also turned his attention to solemn matters. Recognizing World Refugee Day, he expressed deep sorrow for the recent tragic shipwreck off the coast of Greece, where hundreds of migrants lost their lives. Expressing disbelief that such a tragedy could occur in seemingly calm waters, the Pope renewed his prayers for the victims and urged all possible efforts to prevent similar incidents.
The pontiff also offered prayers for the young students who fell victim to a brutal attack on a school in western Uganda. Expressing his concern over the ongoing conflicts and wars plaguing various regions, he called for prayers for peace and solidarity.
Before concluding his remarks, Pope Francis remembered the martyred people in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to stand in solidarity with them following the invasion by Russia.
While the Pope’s doctors have advised him to take it easy and limit his workload, Francis is set to receive the president of Brazil in the coming days. However, he will not conduct the Wednesday general audience in St. Peter’s Square to ensure a smooth recovery.
Looking ahead, the Pope has plans to embark on a pilgrimage to Portugal for a youth jamboree in early August, followed by a historic visit to Mongolia later that month, making him the first pontiff to visit the Asian nation
