31-5-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysia’s top law enforcement official has vowed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into allegations that a disabled e-hailing driver was assaulted by an escort from a prominent individual’s entourage. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, issued a statement on 31st May, asserting that those implicated in the incident will be summoned to Bukit Aman, the Royal Malaysia Police headquarters, to assist with the inquiries.
“This step will ensure that investigations are conducted thoroughly and that all parties can provide their statements,” Tan Sri Razarudin stated. “The priority of each investigation is to ensure no perpetrators escape responsibility for their actions. Strict action will be taken without compromise against any officers found guilty.”
The Inspector-General emphasised the police’s unwavering commitment to preserving integrity and ensuring appropriate measures are taken to uphold justice and safeguard the rights of those affected, with a particular focus on the disabled community.
The allegations stem from an incident that took place at the prestigious St. Regis Kuala Lumpur Hotel, prompting the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, to take to the social media platform X on 31st May. In his post, the Regent expressed his unequivocal stance against any illegal actions or intimidation tactics.
“I immediately urged the Royal Malaysian Police security escort team to cooperate with investigations,” Tunku Ismail declared. “I hope the authorities will take action in accordance with the law and give the victim justice.”
The Regent acknowledged the existence of a movement seeking to “drag the royal institution by using this incident,” but firmly rejected any attempts to link the actions of an external security personnel with himself or the entire royal institution.
The alleged altercation came to light on 28th May when an e-hailing driver lodged a police report claiming he had been assaulted by an escort. However, the driver subsequently filed another report later that day, stating that the matter had been resolved amicably.
