18-6-2023 (BANGKOK) Violent incidents occurred in Muang district of Pattani province and Narathiwat province on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. In the first incident, a police operations base in Ban Khlong Maning, Muang district, Pattani, was attacked by a group of insurgents at approximately 7 am. The attackers unleashed gunfire on the base using various weapons, prompting the police personnel to retaliate. A brief exchange of fire ensued, forcing the insurgents to retreat. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The attack has led to increased vigilance at all road checkpoints, with intensified vehicle inspections to ensure public safety.
In the second incident, which occurred earlier at around 5 pm in Narathiwat province, a pickup truck carrying four villagers who were returning home from a hunting trip near Ban Hulu Kunung in tambon Dusongso, Chanae district, was ambushed by an armed group. The attackers targeted the vehicle, resulting in the death of one villager and injuries to two others. The wounded individuals were immediately rushed to Chanae Hospital for medical treatment.
Following the incident, Noppadol Damsakul, an unharmed villager, promptly reported the attack to a ranger company stationed in tambon Dusongyo.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine any possible links to the ongoing insurgency in the southern region.
