10-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The police investigation into the statement made by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang is focused on potential sedition charges and offences under the Communication and Multimedia Act, according to authorities.
Deputy Commissioner Datuk Suresh Kumar G. Suppiah, the Deputy Director of the Forensic/Strategic Planning Department at Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department, stated that the investigation is being carried out under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.
DCP Suresh Kumar emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation and urged the public not to engage in speculation that could disrupt the process. He also warned that appropriate action would be taken against anyone who poses a threat to the peace and safety of the country.
The police’s attention was drawn to this matter following reports filed by Amanah and Selangor PKR Youth at the Dang Wangi police headquarters. These reports were lodged in response to Abdul Hadi’s statement alleging plans by the Perikatan coalition and the Opposition bloc to topple the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Sentul district police chief ACP Beh Eng Lai had previously announced that the investigation would be conducted by Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit.
