1-5-2024 (MANILA) Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence within a nationwide network of interconnected CCTV cameras could be a game-changer in the fight against street crimes and other illegal activities, stated Philippine National Police (PNP) chief PGen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Wednesday.
Marbil highlighted the absence of legislation mandating a centralized CCTV system across the country, which he believes could significantly aid law enforcement in crime prevention and solving.
Law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on CCTV footage for investigative purposes, often presenting them as evidence in court proceedings against suspects.
“Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos once said… let us come up with a law that will connect because there is no law that will connect all the CCTVs around the Philippines,” Marbil conveyed during an interview with TeleRadyo Serbisyo.
Marbil noted that several other countries have already implemented unified CCTV systems.
“In a recent conversation with the President, he mentioned, ‘You know, in other countries, especially in London, they have so many CCTVs that they can easily use when we go out… you could be captured in 3,000 pictures just for a simple walk back to your home,'” Marbil recounted.
“He also said that if we could utilize this in our country now, our people will surely feel more secure,” he added.
