31-12-2023 (PHUKET) A century-old prison in the popular Thai resort island of Phuket will be transformed into a public park and parking facility, authorities announced, as part of plans to boost tourism infrastructure in the famous old town district.
The 240 million baht project will convert around 33 rai of the 47 rai former jail site, built in 1901, into green space for both locals and visitors to enjoy. Phuket’s prison relocated in 2021 to allow for the redevelopment.
Deputy Governor Amnuay Phimsuwan said the dual-purpose park will address environmental sustainability goals while also providing desperately needed parking in congested old town. A lack of spaces has deterred some tourists.
Beyond its scenic value, the park will feature exhibits on the prison’s history and Phuket’s urban evolution. After public consultations finalize the design, construction funded by the municipal budget will commence.
Officials believe the parking and expanded green space will enhance old town’s draw, aiding the island’s post-pandemic tourism recovery. Phuket welcomed 14.5 million visitors in 2019 before Covid-19’s onset.
This year saw 10 million arrivals and 300 billion baht in tourism revenue so far – the highest nationwide. But attracting visitors to historic districts requires quality infrastructure, the governor stressed.
As Phuket continues rebounding, the project highlights how adapting aging structures can boost sustainability while preserving local heritage. By blending parking with parkland and storytelling, planners aim to heighten old town’s character and visitor appeal.
For Phuket’s residents, repurposing the former prison also creates new community space in the heart of their city. With tourism reimagined, the island can enhance livability alongside chasing visitor dollars.
