25-12-2024 (MANILA) The Philippines’ Defence Ministry has launched a scathing criticism of China, accusing Beijing of sponsoring criminal organisations whilst questioning the deployment of American missile systems to Philippine territory.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Christmas Eve, Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro condemned what he described as China’s hypocritical stance on regional security matters. He highlighted Beijing’s ongoing nuclear arsenal expansion and alleged support for “criminal syndicates and subversive organisations” beyond Chinese borders.
The diplomatic tension escalated following Manila’s announcement of plans to acquire the American-made Typhon missile system, prompting Beijing to voice concerns about a potential regional arms race. The system, which was initially deployed during joint military exercises in northern Philippines earlier this year, remained in place despite Chinese protests about regional destabilisation.
“The Philippines exercises its sovereign right to determine its defence capabilities,” Teodoro emphasised, rebuffing Chinese criticism. “We are a sovereign nation, not anyone’s doorstep, and our security decisions are not subject to foreign vetoes.”
The Typhon system, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, boasts a considerable range of 480 kilometres, with an enhanced version currently under development. Philippine Army Chief Lieutenant-General Roy Galido explained that the system would enable the army to protect maritime assets within the country’s 370-kilometre exclusive economic zone.
The deployment aligns with Manila’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defence Concept, which Teodoro insisted targets security risks rather than specific nations. However, Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun has expressed strong reservations, suggesting the missile deployment poses significant risks to regional stability.
