7-10-2024 (MANILA) The Philippines and South Korea have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic ties. The announcement came during a high-level meeting between Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and his South Korean counterpart, President Yoon Suk Yeol, in Manila on Monday.
The summit, which addressed a wide array of regional and bilateral issues, resulted in the signing of crucial memoranda of understanding (MOUs) focusing on coast guard cooperation and nuclear energy collaboration. These agreements underscore the two nations’ commitment to enhancing their partnership across multiple sectors.
President Yoon emphasised the importance of bolstering security ties, revealing South Korea’s intention to participate in the modernisation programme of the Philippine military. This move is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the Philippines’ defence capabilities in the face of regional challenges.
A key point of discussion during the talks was the contentious issue of the South China Sea. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to upholding an international rules-based order, with particular emphasis on ensuring the safety of navigation in these disputed waters. This stance aligns with broader regional efforts to maintain stability and prevent unilateral actions that could escalate tensions.
The Korean Peninsula situation also featured prominently in the discussions. President Yoon took a firm stance against North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, stating that the international community would not tolerate Pyongyang’s nuclear programme or what he described as “reckless provocations”. This declaration reflects the shared concern of both nations regarding the potential threats posed by North Korea’s military activities.
The upgraded partnership between the Philippines and South Korea comes at a critical time when both countries are navigating complex geopolitical dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region. By strengthening their ties, Manila and Seoul aim to enhance their collective ability to address shared challenges and promote regional stability.
Following his visit to the Philippines, President Yoon is scheduled to continue his Southeast Asian tour with stops in Singapore and Laos. In Laos, he will participate in the regional summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders, along with representatives from several other Asian countries. This broader engagement underscores South Korea’s commitment to playing an active role in regional affairs and fostering closer ties with Southeast Asian nations.
