22-2-2025 (MANILA) The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) joined forces with the French Navy for a comprehensive naval exercise in the West Philippine Sea yesterday, marking a crucial step in strengthening bilateral defence relations between the two nations.
The joint Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) represents the third consecutive week of combined naval operations within the Northern Luzon Command’s operational zone, highlighting an intensified focus on regional maritime security cooperation.
The exercise saw an impressive array of naval assets from both nations, with the Philippines deploying its flagship BRP Jose Rizal and the BRP Gregorio del Pilar, alongside C90 aircraft, two FA50s, and dedicated Air Force Search and Rescue units. The French contingent was led by their nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, accompanied by an impressive fleet including the multi-mission destroyer Provence, the newly commissioned supply vessel Jacques Chevallier, and advanced warships Forbin and Alsace.
Participants engaged in a diverse range of tactical manoeuvres, including sophisticated communications exercises, division tactics, and officer of the watch manoeuvres. The drills also incorporated practical elements such as replenishment at sea operations, anti-submarine warfare training, and dissimilar aircraft combat scenarios. Personnel exchanges were facilitated through rigid hull inflatable boats, fostering direct interaction between the allied forces.
Speaking about the exercise, AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S Brawner Jr emphasised its strategic importance: “These collaborative maritime activities are fundamental to developing a robust and adaptable defence framework capable of meeting contemporary security challenges.”
