24-1-2025 (MANILA) The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has launched an investigation into a deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two soldiers and left twelve others wounded in Sumisip, Basilan, as questions emerge over operational protocols in the region.
Brigade Commander Brigadier General Alvin Luzon of the 101st Infantry Brigade confirmed that military authorities are working closely with the Basilan Provincial Police Office to compile evidence and identify the perpetrators. The investigation is expected to lead to multiple charges, including murder, frustrated murder, homicide, arson, and firearms violations.
“We are delegating the legal proceedings to our colleagues in the Philippine National Police, given their expertise in criminal prosecution,” Luzon told reporters at a press briefing.
The incident has prompted immediate response from both government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) authorities. The MILF’s Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH), led by Butch Malang, is scheduled to conduct a Joint Verification visit to MILF units in Basilan on Sunday, whilst Government Peace Panel CCCH Chairman Brigadier General Nasser Lidasan has already visited deployed forces in the area.
However, the attack has sparked debate over operational protocols. MILF-CCCH Basilan Head Hadji Samad Ahadin, whilst condemning the assault and pledging support for accountability, raised concerns about proper coordination procedures. “The normalization agreement stipulates clear protocols for military movements within MILF areas,” Ahadin stated.
The military has strongly contested this claim, asserting that proper coordination was indeed undertaken. Military officials further argued that the “Area of Temporary Stay” referenced by the MILF is no longer valid under current agreements.
