10-7-2023 (MANILA) President Marcos reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the readiness of the military through retooling and retraining initiatives, in addition to procuring state-of-the-art equipment. He emphasized this during his speech at the graduation ceremony of the Philippine Army Officer Candidate Course “Gaigmat” Class 58-2023 held at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on July 7.
Assuring the armed forces of their welfare and development, Marcos stated, “Be assured, the government’s dedication to your advancement and welfare goes beyond providing modern equipment alone. We continue to prioritize retooling and retraining to arm you with intellectual fortitude, tactical prowess, and strategic acumen to thrive in the modern battlefield.”
He invited the graduates to join him and his administration in building a better, safer, and more secure nation for all Filipinos in the years ahead. The Gaigmat Class 58-2023, consisting of 106 graduates, completed one full year of training in soldiery and leadership. Upon completion, they will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants.
Following the graduation ceremony, President Marcos expressed optimism that the country’s military modernization program would regain momentum as the nation recovers from the pandemic.
Regarding the progress of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization program, AFP spokesperson Col. Medel Aguilar reported a 36 percent accomplishment of the planned 150 projects aimed at enhancing the armed forces’ capabilities to defend the country against external threats.
During a virtual interview with ANC News on July 8, Aguilar noted that the program’s further advancement depends on the budget allocation from Congress. The AFP has a 15-year timeline for the modernization program, and currently, they are in the third phase, with 54 projects already completed.
Aguilar highlighted the acquisition of various equipment, such as heavy lift helicopters, combat capability helicopters, tactical radios, amphibious assault vehicles, and civil engineering support equipment. He mentioned the Philippine Army’s plan to acquire high mobility artillery rocket systems (MARS) and Bhramos supersonic cruise missiles, which would enhance the country’s defense capabilities.
Recognizing the maritime nature of the Philippines, Aguilar emphasized the importance of prioritizing the Navy and Air Force in the modernization plan to safeguard the country from external threats. He also noted that the progressing modernization efforts have inspired more individuals to apply to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“There is a recent increase in the number of applicants. Because of the modernization that’s happening right now, the trust and confidence that is given to us by the people which is really inspiring to all of us. All of these contribute now to more applicants who want to join the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” Aguilar added.
