12-8-2023 (MANILA) In the wake of a recent incident involving China’s Coast Guard, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has underscored its preparedness to reinforce its fleet for resupply missions to the BRP Sierra Madre stationed at Ayungin Shoal.
Speaking at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, expressed the organization’s willingness to offer support to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in ensuring the safe transport of supplies.
Should the AFP make such a request, Tarriela stated, “We will deploy vessels that will support the supply mission.”
Moreover, Tarriela revealed that PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu is fully prepared to dispatch additional vessels to enhance ongoing resupply operations. He further noted that the PCG is even considering the deployment of a 97-meter vessel if circumstances dictate such a move, highlighting the organization’s flexibility and adaptability.
The spokesperson also highlighted the possibility of employing an offshore patrol vessel, which would provide a larger and more robust option compared to the previously utilized 44-meter vessel.
The recent escalation in tensions occurred on August 5 when China Coast Guard (CCG) ships employed water cannons against Philippine Coast Guard vessels that were escorting resupply boats en route to the BRP Sierra Madre near Ayungin Shoal.
This incident marked the latest development in the tumultuous West Philippine Sea, revealing China’s utilization of its coast guard, overseen by President Xi Jinping through the Central Military Commission.
The Philippines swiftly condemned the water cannon attack, reiterating that the targeted region falls well within the country’s exclusive economic zone. Over the years, the Department of Foreign Affairs has taken diplomatic action by lodging several protests in response to China’s escalating belligerent actions.
This encounter is not the first instance of CCG ships attempting to obstruct PCG vessels en route to Ayungin Shoal, where the BRP Sierra Madre ran aground back in 1999. In a previous episode on June 30, CCG vessels reportedly endeavored to halt two PCG vessels—the Malabrigo and BRP Malapascua—that were escorting a resupply mission to the outpost.
