22-6-2023 (BANGKOK) To combat the persistent issue of traffic congestion, the Pattaya City Administration has revealed its intentions to introduce four monorail lines in the city. The initial phase will involve constructing a 9.9-kilometre “Green Line” route that will connect the future high-speed train station to Bali Hai pier.
The fourth public hearing on the feasibility study and environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the Pattaya City rail development project was chaired by Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai at the Pattaya Redemptorist Technological College for People with Disabilities on Tuesday. The attendees included representatives from three advisory companies, community leaders, local residents, government agencies, and members from the private and civil society sectors.
Project study supervisor Pongtavee Lertpanyavit informed the media on Wednesday that the much-awaited monorail project would greatly alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the city’s transportation system. During the public hearing, over 80% of the participants agreed that a monorail system was the most suitable option for Pattaya City. City Hall presented a comprehensive plan for four monorail lines, namely Green, Yellow, Purple, and Red, along with the proposed locations for maintenance and service centers.
According to Pongtavee, Pattaya intends to prioritize the construction of the Green Line, as it will provide convenient access for passengers traveling on the future Don Mueang–Suvarnabhumi–U-Tapao high-speed rail route to Pattaya Beach. The Green Line will consist of 13 stations, commencing from the high-speed train station and terminating at Bali Hai pier, where tourists can board boats to Koh Lan.
The development project will be carried out in three phases, explained Pongtavee. The first phase (2021-2026) will involve constructing the Green Line and the Yellow Line, which will be a dual-track rail project connecting the city of Chon Buri to the Sattahip district in the southern part of the province. The second phase (2027-2031) will focus on constructing the Purple Line, which will span from the Nong Prue municipality to Muang Pattaya 8 School in Bang Lamung district. Finally, the third phase (2032-2036) will see the realization of the Red Line, which will run from the Eastern National Sports Training Centre on Chaiyaphruek 2 Road to the dolphin roundabout.
