25-6-2023 (BANGKOK) The Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4 Forward Command has lodged a complaint with the Pattani provincial police regarding a student-led call for a referendum on establishing an independent “Patani state.” The police have announced that they will initiate an investigation into the matter, forming a team of experienced investigators to examine witnesses and evidence before summoning those implicated.
Pol Maj Gen Archan Chansiri, the chief of the Pattani provincial police, stated on Saturday, “We will set up a team of highly-experienced investigators to inspect witnesses and evidence before summoning those involved.”
The complaint was submitted by Isoc’s Region 4 Forward Command, which dispatched its soldiers to file the complaint with the police on Friday.
The group of students, who are the main suspects in this case, made the call for an independent “Patani state” during a seminar titled “Self-determination and Patani Peace” held at the Prince of Songkla University in Pattani on June 7. A mock referendum was conducted during the seminar.
According to a source, over 10 individuals, including students and politicians, have been implicated in this incident. The call for an independent state is considered a violation of the constitution, Criminal Code, and the Computer Act, thereby impacting national security.
Maj Gen Pramote Prom-in, the deputy director of Isoc’s Region 4 Forward Command, emphasized that state agencies have been promoting fundamental rights, including freedom of expression. However, he stressed the importance of respecting the rights of others and behaving lawfully. He also expressed concerns that this incident could be perceived as an attempt by separatist groups to disrupt peace and stability in the southernmost provinces.
