6-11-2024 (EDINBURGH) A tragic incident in Edinburgh’s historic Cowgate district left residents and Halloween revellers in shock as a 74-year-old man lost his life in a devastating collision with a single-decker bus yesterday evening.
The incident, led to widespread disruption in the city centre, with police establishing an extensive cordon around the scene. The gravity of the situation was initially masked by Halloween celebrations, with some witnesses initially mistaking the scene for elaborate holiday decorations.

Chief Inspector Trisha Clark addressed the public, emphasising that the incident was isolated and posed no broader risk to the community. “This was a tragic occurrence that is currently under thorough investigation by our road policing officers, supported by local units,” she stated.
Local businesses faced immediate disruption, with several establishments forced to close their doors. Bannerman’s Bar patrons were temporarily locked in before being escorted through alternative exits, while Bachata Blues dance school announced the cancellation of its evening events at The Mash House.
Katie McLaughlin, 31, from Dumfries, described the surreal atmosphere: “Initially, we thought it must be part of the Halloween festivities, but staff quickly confirmed the gravity of the situation. The police presence was substantial, with multiple vehicles and officers securing the area.”
The incident prompted closure of several major thoroughfares, including Blair Street, Guthrie Street, and Candlemaker Row, with authorities requesting the public avoid the area. A hotel receptionist working nearby expressed shock upon learning of the tragedy during her morning shift.
