10-2-2025 (MANILA) The camp of former senator and boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has issued a formal apology after one of their service vehicles was caught illegally using the EDSA bus lane.
The incident, which unfolded on Sunday, involved a service van and SUV from Pacquiao’s entourage, both equipped with unauthorised emergency lights and sirens, according to the Department of Transportation’s Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT).
Head of Pacquiao’s security detail, Jojo Cagumay, addressed the situation in a statement, confirming that disciplinary action had been taken. “I have personally reprimanded the driver and instructed him to return to the scene, issue a proper apology, and accept the corresponding traffic citation,” Cagumay stated.
The situation escalated when the vehicles’ occupants, who identified themselves as members of Pacquiao’s security team, initially promised to pull over but subsequently attempted to evade authorities. The van later returned to face penalties.
“The driver’s decision to flee rather than comply with authorities was entirely inappropriate. We assume full responsibility for this lapse in judgment,” Cagumay emphasised, noting that the vehicle contained several staff members at the time of the incident.
Authorities issued traffic violation tickets to the convoy for two infractions: disregarding traffic signage and the unauthorised use of emergency lights. Cagumay confirmed that the former boxing champion was not aware of the incident when it occurred.
In response to the breach, Pacquiao has reportedly instructed his entire team to maintain strict adherence to traffic regulations. “Mr Pacquiao has always emphasised the importance of discipline and legal compliance. This incident does not reflect his values,” Cagumay added.
