1-2-2024 (BEIJING) A tourist climbed to the top of the towering Leshan Giant Buddha statue in the Lingyun Temple, reaching a height of 70 meters, and proceeded to urinate directly onto the monument. The Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest extant stone-carved seated Buddha in the world. This egregious act, captured by onlookers, has sparked widespread outrage across social media platforms.
According to reports by the Chinese media outlet “China News Weekly,” the incident occurred on January 31st at the Leshan Giant Buddha scenic area in Sichuan Province. A male visitor climbed to the top of the Buddha’s head and shamelessly relieved himself, prompting condemnation from bystanders. However, surveillance cameras at the site failed to capture the man’s ascent, and park patrol personnel were unaware of the incident until afterwards. Upon discovery, park staff promptly intervened and escorted the individual away from the area.
Authorities have since detained the man for investigation and psychological evaluation. If found to be mentally sound, he will face appropriate legal consequences for his actions.
The news of this disgraceful behaviour has sparked a wave of condemnation online, with many expressing outrage and disbelief. Comments from netizens include, “This is beyond belief. I think such people should be detained for at least ten days,” “He will face consequences for his actions. You may not believe it, but you must respect it,” “This is deeply concerning for our society,” “He’s playing with fire. How dare he disrespect the divine?” “This is a serious offence, daring to desecrate the sacred?”
