5-10-2023 (BANGKOK) In response to the tragic shooting at Siam Paragon shopping mall that claimed two lives and injured five others on Tuesday, opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) have put forward a series of public safety proposals. The aim is to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
During a House meeting on Wednesday, Parit Wacharasindhu, list MP of the main opposition Move Forward Party, highlighted the need to expedite the implementation of a cell broadcasting alert system. This system, which enhances public safety, should be carried out by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), according to Mr. Parit. He noted that individuals within the shopping centre did not receive any emergency alerts from the government. Instead, they relied on SMS alerts from private entities and warnings spread through social media.
Mr. Parit stressed the importance of introducing a cell broadcasting alert system, as it could provide timely warnings and assist people in staying safe during emergencies like the shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday.
Furthermore, he called for a comprehensive review of gun-related legislation to impose stricter controls on firearm access. This would involve intensifying efforts to combat illegal firearm sales and strengthening background checks for gun owners. Mr. Parit also appealed to the authorities to ensure that individuals affected by the shooting tragedy receive the necessary assistance.
Gp Capt Anudit Nakornthap, deputy leader of the Thai Sang Thai Party, also expressed concerns regarding the enforcement of firearm control laws in light of the shooting. He suggested that the existing legislation, which has been in place for over 76 years, should be reevaluated and updated, particularly the section pertaining to the inheritance of firearms.
Gp Capt Anudit emphasized the urgency for the government to take decisive action. Although discussions about stricter gun controls arise after each tragic incident, they seldom result in tangible measures. He joined the call for the establishment of an emergency alert system in the country. Such a system, he argued, should not only provide alerts but also offer guidance to the public on how to keep themselves safe during emergencies.
Finally, Gp Capt Anudit urged the government to restore confidence in public safety, particularly among tourists, as the tourism sector plays a pivotal role in driving the nation’s economy.
