21-6-2023 (SAN FRANCISCO) OpenAI, the creator of the widely acclaimed chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a marketplace that will enable developers to sell their AI models built on top of OpenAI’s own AI technology, as per sources familiar with the discussions at the company, as reported by news site the Information on Tuesday.
Enterprise customers who utilize ChatGPT often customize the technology to suit their specific needs. These applications range from detecting financial fraud using online transaction data to providing insights about specific markets based on internal documents. According to the news report, developers who create such AI models could potentially offer them to other businesses through OpenAI’s proposed marketplace.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apparently disclosed these potential plans during a meeting with developers in London last month, as mentioned in the report.
The establishment of such a marketplace would put OpenAI in competition with app stores operated by some of its customers and technology partners, including Salesforce and Microsoft. Additionally, it would help OpenAI expand the reach of its technology to a broader customer base.
OpenAI has not yet responded to a request for comment from Reuters regarding these reports.
The Information also noted that two of OpenAI’s customers, Aquant and Khan Academy, have expressed interest in offering their AI models powered by ChatGPT on OpenAI’s marketplace. Aquant develops software used by manufacturers to guide customers through device maintenance and repairs, while Khan Academy is an education app maker.
Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has gained significant traction, with hundreds of businesses adopting the platform to automate tasks and enhance operational efficiency. Companies are in a race to provide their customers with new tools and capabilities based on the advanced language models offered by AI software.
