5-12-2024 (MANILA) Grammy-winning artist Olivia Rodrigo has released an intimate vlog documenting her maiden voyage to the Philippines, offering fans a glimpse into her emotional connection with her Filipino heritage.
The Filipino-American songstress, who brought her GUTS world tour to Manila last October, shared candid footage of her explorations around the Philippine capital, describing the visit as a “dream come true.”
“Being half-Filipino through my father’s side, visiting the Philippines has always been on my bucket list,” Rodrigo revealed in the documentary-style footage. The 20-year-old chart-topper, accompanied by her father, was seen wandering through the historic streets of Intramuros, immersing herself in the rich cultural tapestry of Old Manila.
A highlight of her cultural expedition included a traditional Filipino feast at Sarsa restaurant, where celebrated Chef JP Anglo prepared a special boodle fight-style spread. “I’m particularly excited to savour the Filipino dishes I grew up with, especially halo-halo, my favourite dessert,” the “vampire” singer shared enthusiastically.
In a remarkable display of philanthropy, Rodrigo visited the Manila headquarters of Jhpiego foundation, where she donated proceeds from her concert. The foundation, which champions women’s and girls’ health, benefited from the singer’s innovative “Silver Star” ticketing scheme, making the concert accessible with all tickets priced under $26.
The culmination of her visit saw Rodrigo performing at the Philippine Arena to thousands of adoring fans. “Every song I write comes from a place of genuine emotion,” she reflected. “Seeing these feelings resonate with countless people I’ve never met creates an indescribably magical connection.”
The “drivers license” hitmaker struggled to contain her emotions during the landmark performance. “I kept thinking about my family throughout the show,” she said, visibly moved. “The overwhelming support from everyone who attended makes me feel like the luckiest person alive.”
The vlog has garnered overwhelming support from Filipino fans, with many praising Rodrigo’s embrace of her heritage.
