1-2-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The anticipation surrounding the partial royal pardon for former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is set to conclude this week, according to Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department responsible for federal territories, on Thursday (Feb 1).
“We await the statement (from the pardons board) … this week, we hope,” stated Dr. Zaliha, who is a member of the pardons board, during an event.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the issue of Najib’s pardon was deliberated in a Cabinet meeting. However, he urged caution, stating, “Let’s not jump the gun. Let us wait for an official statement to be made and follow that due process.”
Earlier reports from official sources, as cited by CNA on Wednesday (Jan 31), indicated that Najib’s corruption-related jail term had been reduced from 12 years to six years following his application for a pardon. The decision was reached during the pardons board’s meeting on Jan 29.
