9-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Emeritus Professor Tan Yock Lin, a distinguished senior law professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), has been identified as the 70-year-old man who tragically lost his life in a fatal accident along Upper Thomson Road towards Lornie Road on Friday morning, July 7.
The accident involved multiple vehicles, including a car, a bus, a lorry, and a van. Disturbing video footage captured the moment when the lorry crashed through the center divider and collided with a car.
News of the accident was initially reported by CNA on July 7, while the confirmation of Tan’s passing came from The Straits Times on July 8. An email sent by the dean of the NUS law faculty on July 8 confirmed Tan’s identity as the victim, informing staff of the heartbreaking news. The email expressed condolences, stating, “Our colleague and friend, Tan Yock Lin, has passed away following a road accident yesterday morning.”
Upon arrival at the scene, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) discovered a man trapped in the driver’s seat of the car. Utilizing hydraulic rescue equipment, they carefully cut and removed the roof of the vehicle to extricate him. The man remained conscious throughout the rescue operation and was promptly conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the police and SCDF. Two other individuals involved in the accident sustained minor injuries but declined hospitalization.
At the scene, an SCDF paramedic provided medical assistance to stabilize the man’s injuries while rescue teams worked diligently to free his legs, which were trapped beneath the dashboard. In addition, an emergency medical team from Tan Tock Seng Hospital was activated to provide further medical aid.
The police have arrested a 26-year-old male lorry driver on charges of careless driving causing death.
