19-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) On the afternoon of 16th January 2024, a four-storey-high noise barrier panel collapsed at Block 208 Pasir Ris St 21, creating a stir at a construction site. The incident occurred at approximately 5 pm, prompting authorities to respond promptly to assess the situation.
The affected area, part of ongoing construction works for the Pasir Ris East MRT station as part of the Cross Island Line development, witnessed the collapse due to a toppled grabber. A Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson confirmed that the machine, engaged in construction activities, played a role in the incident.
Bystanders at the scene captured the dramatic moment on video, showcasing the machine tearing through the noise barrier panels. Images from Shin Min Daily News displayed the aftermath, with broken parts of the panel scattered on the ground.
Despite the alarming nature of the collapse, LTA assured that no injuries were reported among the workers, and there was no damage to the adjacent HDB block. A Professional Engineer has certified the remaining structure as safe, providing a degree of reassurance.
Repair works are currently underway, with the site surrounded by a protective fence reaching two storeys in height. The damaged noise barrier panel is being addressed, and LTA has implemented a noise balloon to mitigate sound disturbances during the repair process.
In response to the incident, LTA has declared a safety time-out, emphasizing a thorough inspection of the site’s safety conditions before allowing contractors to resume their work. The authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the noise barrier panel collapse, underscoring their commitment to safety in construction projects.
