27-1-2024 (MANILA) Government troops in the southern Philippines successfully neutralized nine members of a pro-Islamic State group, the military confirmed on Saturday (Jan 27), with two of them being prime suspects in a fatal blast at a Catholic Mass held last month.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) disclosed that the counter-terrorism operation, conducted on Thursday and Friday in Lanao del Sur province, resulted in injuries to four soldiers. However, all wounded personnel are reported to be in stable condition.
The individuals eliminated during the operation were affiliated with Daulah Islamiyah, according to the AFP. Daulah Islamiyah is a pro-Islamic State militant faction that seized control of Marawi city in 2017 and sustained its hold despite extensive ground offensives and airstrikes by the military.
Of particular significance, among the deceased were the two main suspects implicated in the bombing that occurred on Dec 3 at a university gymnasium in Marawi. The explosion claimed the lives of at least four individuals and left 50 others wounded.
Military chief Romeo Brawner commended the precision and steadfast commitment demonstrated during the operation, asserting that it swiftly delivered justice for the victims of the heinous attack.
“This operation sets a clear precedent: the AFP will not tolerate those who endanger the lives and well-being of our people,” declared Brawner in a statement issued following the successful mission.
