15-9-2023 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, expressed his opposition to the recreational use of cannabis in an interview with Thai digital news outlet, The Standard, on Friday. However, he affirmed that the policy permitting the medical use of cannabis would remain in effect during his administration.
“Cannabis policy will focus exclusively on medical cannabis. As for recreational use, I do not support that,” he stated.
Thailand’s cannabis industry has seen remarkable growth, and it is anticipated to reach a value of up to $1.2 billion over the coming years. This surge began following the legalization of cannabis consumption and cultivation last year, leading to the establishment of thousands of related businesses.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Srettha, who also serves as the country’s finance minister, unveiled a series of economic policies designed to stimulate consumption and spending as Thailand continues to recover from the economic challenges posed by the pandemic.
He described these policies as targeted measures that would significantly boost domestic spending. One of his signature initiatives involves providing a 10,000 baht ($282.09) giveaway to all Thai citizens through digital wallets, aimed at encouraging economic activity.
