21-10-2024 (JAKARTA) Sugiono, the incoming Minister of Foreign Affairs for Indonesia, is set to be sworn in today as part of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s new administration. Speaking at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, Sugiono shared insights into the diplomatic directives he has received from President Prabowo.
“The President’s primary instruction is to maintain robust communication with our neighbouring countries,” Sugiono stated, highlighting the administration’s focus on regional diplomacy and cooperation. This emphasis on nurturing strong ties with Indonesia’s immediate neighbours suggests a continuation of the country’s commitment to regional stability and mutual understanding.
In addition to regional relations, Sugiono affirmed that the Palestinian issue remains a key priority for Indonesia’s foreign policy. “Naturally, our efforts to support our brothers and sisters in Palestine will continue,” he declared, indicating that Indonesia’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause will remain unwavering under the new government.
This stance appears to be in line with the approach of his predecessor, Retno Marsudi, who was known for her vocal advocacy on humanitarian issues in Palestine. Marsudi had consistently positioned Indonesia as a strong supporter of Palestinian rights on the international stage.
Sugiono’s appointment comes as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle, with a total of 48 ministers scheduled to be inaugurated by President Prabowo today.
